In addition to her work at UTS she is also involved heavily with the IEEE, as Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion for IEEE Photonics Society. She has published journals and books in photonics modelling. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE, OSA and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics. She is an expert on numerical methods for optics including the Finite Element Method (FEM). Agrawal’s research interests lie in predicting and controlling the flow of light: modelling of photonic components such as plasmonics, solar cells, optical fibers, sensors, lasers etc. In this role she is responsible for policy, strategy and implementation to increase female participation in engineering and IT at UTS.ĭr. Agrawal joined University of Technology Sidney (UTS) in January 2018 with time evenly split between roles of Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Data Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and IT, and Director of the Women in Engineering and IT programme. Arti Agrawal, during this LGBTQIA+ Pride Month 2020: we want to give her the voice she deserves as a woman, as a scientist, and as a LGBTQIA+ activist.ĭr. For all these reasons, to join our claims for equality, SEDOPTICA-MOF and PRISMA got together to interview scientist and changemaker Dr. A worldwide turning point in the fight for sexoaffective and gender identity equality were the Stonewall riots (1969) in commemoration of this milestone, June was chosen as the LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. Nowadays, in our scientific environment, the need for rising up our voices against gender and LGBTQIA+ discrimination is still relevant. Futhermore, women within the LGBTQIA+ community are often less visible than their male counterparts. Female scientists from LGBTQIA+ minorities suffer from a double discrimination: as women they are subject to transversal gender discrimination and inequality whereas as LGTBIA+ individuals they are also affected by the persistence of serious problems such as infrarepresentation, pressure to stay in the closet, harassment in the workplace, or the high unemployment rates of transgender scientists.
